Every summer my husband and I would start talking about a real vacation, flights, a beach somewhere, the whole thing, and every summer something would get in the way. A work deadline. A kid’s camp schedule. A savings account that needed to recover from the last big trip. Last year we finally gave up on waiting for the perfect week off and decided to just stay home instead, on purpose, and actually plan it like a trip.

I went into it expecting a consolation prize. What we got instead was one of the most connected weekends we had had in months. No packing, no flight delays, no scrambling for a sitter three states away, just the two of us treating our own town, and our own house, like somewhere worth exploring. If you are waiting for the stars to align for a big getaway, here are 35 staycation ideas that will make you forget you ever needed one.
Turn Your Own Home Into a Little Getaway
1. Book yourselves a “room.” Pick your nicest bedroom, change the sheets, add real candles, and treat it like a hotel room for the night, phones charging in another room.
2. Order room service, from your own kitchen. Make a little tray of breakfast, carry it to bed, and let the day start slow.
3. Build a blanket fort for grown-ups. Pillows, string lights, a laptop propped up for movies. It sounds silly until you are in it.
4. Run a spa night with a real menu. Write out “treatments” on an index card, face masks, foot soaks, a shoulder rub, and take turns choosing from the list.
5. Have a candlelit dinner at your own table. Turn off the overhead lights, put on music, and eat the meal you would usually save for a night out.
6. Do a full digital detox evening. Phones in a drawer from 6 p.m. on. You will be shocked how long an evening actually is.
Book a Night (or Two) Somewhere Close
7. Try the boutique hotel downtown you always drive past. Local hotels often have better weekend rates than you would expect, and you get a new view without a long drive.
8. Find a cabin an hour outside town. Look for one with a hot tub or a fireplace, book two nights, and leave your laptops at home.
9. Splurge on a rooftop bar hotel. Even one drink up top, watching the sunset over a city you know by heart, feels like a trip.
10. Get a day pass at a resort spa. Some resorts sell day access to their pools and spas even if you are not staying overnight, which is a full staycation in itself.
11. Book a historic bed and breakfast nearby. They tend to be full of the kind of charm and quiet you would pay a lot more for somewhere else.
12. Try a lakeside or riverside Airbnb. Waking up to water, even for one night, resets something in both of you.
Play Tourist in Your Own City
13. Visit the museum you have somehow never been to. Every city has one. Go slow, read every plaque, act like out of towners.
14. Do a food truck crawl. Pick three or four trucks, split small orders at each, and make an afternoon of it.
15. Take a walking tour of your own downtown. Most cities have free or cheap guided tours that surface history you have walked past a hundred times.
16. Spend a Saturday morning at the farmers market. Buy something you have never cooked before and figure out dinner together.
17. Explore a neighborhood you never have a reason to visit. Park the car, wander, stop wherever looks interesting.
18. Do a local brewery or winery tour. Many small operations offer tastings that feel like a trip to wine country without leaving the county.
Make the Backyard Feel Like a Retreat
19. Pitch a tent in the backyard. Full camping experience, none of the driving, and you can still use the bathroom inside.
20. Set up a stargazing blanket night. Bring out every blanket you own, a thermos of something warm, and just look up for a while.
21. Rent or borrow an outdoor projector. String up a sheet, make popcorn, and watch a movie under the actual sky.
22. Claim the hammock for an entire afternoon. Take turns reading out loud to each other, or just doze.
23. Turn a regular grill night into an event. Real playlist, string lights, cloth napkins even. The food tastes different when the setting does.
24. Have a pool day with zero agenda. Floats, snacks within arm’s reach, and a rule that nobody checks their phone until dinner.
Cook Up a Whole Staycation Around Food
25. Pick a country and cook your way through it. Choose a cuisine you both love, find three recipes, and spend the day cooking together.
26. Host your own wine and cheese tasting. Buy small amounts of four or five pairings and rate them like judges.
27. Take an online cocktail class together. Order the ingredients ahead, put on the tutorial, and toast to however badly your first round turns out.
28. Make breakfast the whole event. Pancakes from scratch, real coffee, the good syrup, no rushing off anywhere after.
29. Do a dessert only dinner, just once. Bake two or three things you have always wanted to try and call it a meal.
30. Recreate the meal from your first date. Even a rough version of it brings back the whole night.
Slow Down and Actually Reconnect
31. Take a couples’ stretching or yoga class together, even from a video. It is a strange kind of bonding that not many people expect.
32. Write each other a list of favorite memories. Read them out loud over coffee the next morning.
33. Plan a “no plans” day, on purpose. Nothing scheduled, nowhere to be, and see what you actually want to do with the time.
34. Take a long walk with no destination. Talk about nothing important. Those conversations tend to turn into the important ones anyway.
35. Sleep in until you both wake up naturally. No alarms, no reason to rush. It is a small luxury that a real vacation cannot always guarantee either.
That first staycation weekend, my husband looked at me around hour two of doing absolutely nothing and said, “we should have done this months ago.” He was right. You do not need a plane ticket to feel like you got away together. Sometimes all it takes is deciding, on purpose, to treat your own town and your own home like somewhere worth showing up for.
